This page is also available in: Deutsch

Canton Zug cut its tax multiplier from 82% to 78% for 2026, and the eleven communes underneath it each add their own on top. Here is when it is worth paying for help with your return, what the 2026 numbers mean for your wallet, and which commune is actually the cheapest.

Do you actually need a Zug tax consultant?

Honest answer: not always. Two minutes of self-diagnosis:

DIY is fine

  • Employed, single income source
  • No property, no side business
  • Standard deductions: pillar 3a, commuting, health insurance

The canton’s free eTax software covers it. Grab the checklist below and you’re set.

Get a professional

  • B permit: switching from Quellensteuer to ordinary assessment
  • Buying property, or renting one out
  • Self-employment, GmbH or AG
  • Inheritance, or arriving from abroad mid-year

This is where a good Treuhänder pays for themselves, and the first conversation costs nothing.

Who I recommend in Zug: Ynoves AG

Ynoves AG

Member of TREUHAND|SUISSE and EXPERTsuisse · Steinhausen/Zug

Ynoves is a fiduciary and tax advisory firm five minutes from Zug, working with private clients and companies across canton Zug: tax returns, planning and representation, pensions, inheritance. I know the team, I use their services myself, and they speak proper English, which matters more than you’d think when the Steuererklärung lands in January.

One more reason they get the recommendation: a lot of Swiss “advisors” are really commission salesmen, and the classic move is packaging life insurance into your pillar 3a. That exact play cost me tens of thousands, and it is the reason this site exists. A trusted tax advisor bills you for advice, full stop. That is what you get here: no product pitches, no policies smuggled into your pension.

I know the Ynoves founders personally and personally use & recommend their services. As always: opinions are my own, readers before commissions. This page is general information, not tax advice; figures are from official federal (ESTV) and cantonal sources. Full disclaimer.

Taxes in Zug: the actual numbers

How to read this: these are not income tax rates. Switzerland first works out a “simple tax” from your income using the cantonal tariff. The canton, your commune and, if you are a member, your church then each charge a percentage of that simple tax. Those percentages are the multipliers below. A combined multiplier of 130% does not mean 130% tax, it means 130% of the simple tax amount.

Municipal multiplier
% of the simple tax
52%
City of Zug, municipal rate
Cantonal multiplier

78%

Church tax

What that means in francs. A single person on CHF 100,000 gross in the city of Zug pays CHF 5,321 in total income tax for 2026, about 5.3% of gross, federal tax included. Their marginal rate, the tax on the next franc earned, is 15.1%. Figures are illustrative and based on published 2026 cantonal comparisons. For your own situation use the official cantonal calculator.

Zug tax multiplier: the 4-year trend

2023 2024 2025 2026
Zug municipal multiplier 52.92% 52.11% 52.11% 52%
Canton Zug multiplier 80% 82% 82% 78%
Combined multiplier
% of the simple tax
132.92% 134.11% 134.11% 130%

For 2026 the city of Zug trimmed its multiplier slightly to 52%, and the canton cut more sharply from 82% to 78%. Combined that is 130% against 134.11% last year, so the same taxable income costs you less in 2026. Church tax comes on top, only if you are a registered member.

Every commune in canton Zug, compared

Zug is a small canton. Eleven municipalities, most of them within fifteen minutes of each other, all sharing the same cantonal tax law, the same deadlines and the same cantonal multiplier. The one thing that genuinely varies is the municipal multiplier, which is why this table matters more than anything else on this page if you are deciding where to live.

Commune 2023 2024 2025 2026
Baar 50.88% 50.88% 51% 47.53%
Walchwil 53% 53% 53% 51%
Zug 52.92% 52.11% 52.11% 52%
Unterägeri 57% 56% 54% 53%
Hünenberg 60% 57% 54% 53%
Steinhausen 56% 54% 54% 53%
Cham 59% 56% 54% 54%
Oberägeri 60% 57% 54% 54%
Risch 56% 55% 55% 54%
Menzingen 65% 61% 59% 55%
Neuheim 65% 65% 65% 59%
Canton Zug (applies on top) 80% 82% 82% 78%

Baar is the cheapest commune in the canton for 2026 at 47.53%, having cut its rate sharply from 51%. The city of Zug is third at 52%, which surprises people who assume the capital is always cheapest. Neuheim is the most expensive at 59%, despite making the largest single-year cut in the canton.

The spread between cheapest and dearest is 11.47 percentage points of the simple tax. On a substantial income that is a real number, but it is worth keeping in perspective: every commune here sits under the same cantonal rate of 78%, which is among the lowest in Switzerland. Moving from Neuheim to Baar saves less than moving to canton Zug from almost anywhere else.

Several figures are the effective rate after a council rebate rather than the nominal rate, because the effective rate is what you actually pay. Church tax is charged on top and only if you are a registered member. Verified 8 August 2026.

The Zug tax year: dates that actually matter

Is Zug city the cheapest commune in the canton?

No, and it is worth knowing: Baar undercuts the city at 47.53% against 52%. Zug city is still among the cheapest addresses in Switzerland, and cantonal tax is identical everywhere in the canton.

I’m on a B permit and taxed at source. Do I need to file a return?

Above CHF 120K income (or with additional income/assets) you move to ordinary assessment. That switch is one of the most common reasons expats in Zug get professional help, and getting it wrong is expensive. Worth a free consultation.

The city of Zug set its 2026 multiplier at 52%, and the canton cut from 82% to 78%. Combined, Zug city residents are taxed on 130%, down from 134.11% in 2025. Source: cantonal Steuerfüsse publication, January 2026.

Zug city vs Baar: which has lower taxes?

For 2026, Baar (47.53%) undercuts Zug city (52%). Cantonal tax is identical everywhere in the canton, so on the municipal component Zug is currently the cheapest address in Zug.
