The best bank in Switzerland is not a bank your parents would recognise. For most people most of the time, it is a free smartphone account that does the everyday job better than the branch on the Bahnhofstrasse, for a fraction of the cost. I have tested the whole field with real accounts and real money; this page is the shortlist, the honest trade-offs, and who should pick what.
Ratings come from my full reviews, each tested hands-on. Figures checked August 2026.

What is a neobank, and is Switzerland’s version any good?
A neobank is a bank you only ever meet through an app. No branches, no paper, no advisor in a suit: the whole relationship lives on your phone, which is why the running costs are low enough to give the account away for free. The term covers two quite different constructions, and in Switzerland the difference matters more than the marketing does.
Some neobanks are banks. Zak is Bank Cler with an app in front of it, and neon’s accounts sit at Hypothekarbank Lenzburg. In both cases your money is at a licensed Swiss bank, protected by esisuisse up to 100’000 CHF. Others hold a fintech licence instead, like yapeal: supervised by FINMA, allowed to hold your money, but without esisuisse deposit insurance behind it. Neither model is dishonest; they simply carry different risk at the point where it matters, which is the unlikely day the provider fails.
Swiss neobanks are also a narrower proposition than their European cousins. Revolut and N26 chase every feature going; the Swiss ones concentrate on doing everyday banking properly with local IBANs, TWINT, QR bills and eBill, the things that actually make an account usable here. That focus is why a free Swiss app account can genuinely replace the paid one at your cantonal bank, and why it usually cannot replace it for mortgages or cash handling.
The practical takeaway: pick your neobank on the licence, the card terms and whether it does the small Swiss things, not on the app design. The table above ranks them exactly that way.
Why neon wins the main-account job
Free account, free Swiss payments, deposits at an esisuisse-insured bank, and the strongest investing add-ons of the app banks, including a pillar 3a. It is the account I recommend by default, and the full reasoning with every fee is in the neon review. The honest catch: cash deposits are clumsy, like every app bank.
When a traditional bank still makes sense
Mortgages, cash handling, a human at a counter, business accounts: the cantonal banks and big banks still own those jobs, and they charge accordingly. The pragmatic Swiss setup in 2026 is a free app account for daily money plus a traditional relationship only where you genuinely need one. Paying 10 to 15 CHF a month just to store a salary is a subscription to nostalgia.
My rules for choosing a Swiss bank
- Free is the baseline, not a bonus.A standard account with standard cards should cost 0 CHF in 2026. Every franc of base fee needs a reason.
- Check where the deposits actually sit.Bank licence with esisuisse cover (neon via Hypothekarbank Lenzburg, Zak via Bank Cler) versus fintech licence without it (yapeal). It only matters when it really matters.
- Match the card to your travel.Abroad often: yapeal’s 0% FX or neon with its small markup. Mostly home: any of them plus the Swisscard cashback duo.
- Do not marry your bank.Switching costs an afternoon. Run the new account in parallel for a month, move the standing orders, done.
Best bank Switzerland FAQ
What is the best bank in Switzerland right now?
For everyday banking, neon: free, esisuisse-insured deposits, fair FX and real investing features. Different jobs have different winners, which is what the table above is for.
Are smartphone banks like neon safe?
neon’s accounts sit at Hypothekarbank Lenzburg, a licensed Swiss bank with esisuisse deposit insurance up to 100’000 CHF. The app is the interface; the bank behind it is the safety.
What is the best free bank account in Switzerland?
neon and Zak are both genuinely free for the standard account. neon takes it on features; Zak answers with a full banking licence of its own.
Which Swiss banking app is best for travel?
yapeal passes the Visa exchange rate on 1:1 with no markup on every plan, which is rare. neon is close behind with a small markup. Traditional bank cards are usually the worst deal abroad.
Should I leave my cantonal bank?
Not necessarily, but stop paying it for jobs an app does free. Keep the relationship for mortgages or cash needs and move the everyday account to a free app; the two coexist happily.
What about UBS or the big banks?
Full-service, full-price. For plain everyday banking the app accounts do the same job for free; the big banks earn their fees only when you need their full toolbox.
